Learn the sounds and script of Devanāgarī, the name of the script for Saṅskṛta, the language of yoga.  This ancient language connects each of us with our true consciousness via specific vibrations that emerge as we chant or in conversation. As such, this two-week intensive will focus on accurate pronunciation. We will learn the systematic organization of sounds and letters that form the foundation of Saṅskṛta, though the time-tested tradition of Oral-Yoga. We will chant an opening and a closing mantra in each class.

The participants will:

- be able to read and write Devanāgarī

- gain a deep understanding of some of the important philosophical aspects of Saṅskṛta

- experience the relationship of Saṅskṛta with yoga

- get an introduction to the root sounds of Saṅskṛta

- learn an opening and closing mantra which is powerful for tuning our senses and minds to maximize our effort and absorption on this journey

No previous knowledge of Saṅskṛta or yoga is necessary. Participants will be provided with handouts as needed. It is highly encouraged that participants attend the entire session, but is not mandatory. Please bring a dedicated notebook to class, and spend some time reviewing the letters and sounds at home everyday.

ACCLAIMED GUEST TEACHERS

Born and raised in India, with the blessings and teaching from her parents and teachers, Geetanjali Tiwari's journey with meditation, yoga and Indian classical vocal music started at an early age. Her love for learning and nature guided her towards a MS from the Wildlife Institute of India. She continued the search for knowledge with a PhD in Anthropology and taught in academia where she laid the foundation for South Asian Studies. She has led several groups to India and has built deep bonds with her students who were seeking what life truly had to offer. After a decade it became very clear to her that academia would not offer the knowledge she was seeking and she has since fully devoted her time to the study of Sanskrita, mantra chanting, and the practice of yoga.

Mary Kirkendoll is the owner of the Eudora Yoga Center in Eudora, Kansas. Born and raised in California, Mary earned three degrees in classical flute performance from music schools in New York and Kansas and has taught and performed classical contemporary music around the world. In 2009 she was introduced to Aṣṭāṅga Vinyāsa Yoga, and will be forever grateful for the opportunity to be a student of this beautiful practice. She received yoga teacher certifications and is thankful to all of her many teachers for their support and guidance. In 2015 Mary opened the Eudora Yoga Center, sold her flutes, and is following her interests in Sanskrita and meditation. She lives with her husband above the yoga studio.
